Thanlyin was the home base of Portuguese mercenary Philip de Brito, who declared independence from his Rakhine masters in 1603 and was impaled in 1613 after Burmese king Anaukpetlun had recaptured the city. De Brito received this special treatment for offences against Buddhism. In an audacious move, De Brito had stolen de Dhammazedi bell from Shwedagon. De Brito’s tomb can be found in the ruins of the “Portuguese” church, built in 1749 by an Italian missionary. The roof is missing, but the walls of the church still stand tall. The area is leafy and some colonial houses can be found nearby. If you are looking for a pleasant escape from the city, this is it. (Source: Myanmore)

Ancient historical place near downtown. You can listen the history of it from the smart man who lives in there. Can take photos and take a rest under the trees.

Worth a visit if you are passing by the area. They are trying to preserve this ancient structure. Two graves are still present, one Armenian and one Portuguese.

Gate was locked when I got to the church about 12:30pm on a Sunday, but eventually a caretaker came and opened it up. Gave me a thorough tour and I threw him a small donation for the effort. If you’re coming this way it’s worth a visit.

Very cool ruins of a Portuguese Catholic church, built sometime around 1750. Three of the main walls are still standing, and some of the brick flooring is still there. Moss on the walls and structure make for an interesting visual. To get there turn right off the main road right before a gas station, then follow the small road to the top of a hill.

It was built in 1970 AD and only the remains of the walls have left. It is located near Thanlyan Bridge. Not much to explore as the roof and major parts of the church were gone. There was a tomb of the preist who built it, inside the church. Some parts of the wall are covered with small plants. It is most ancient roman catholic church in myanmar. Worth coming here.
