Bagan Shwe Pyi Highway Bus Terminal

My bus from Yangon arrived here in the wee mornings before sunrise. There were a number of taxis willing to take you to your accommodation, or for hire to drop you off to see sunrise. For sunrise, some wanted to charge us 30 000 kyat/car, another charged us 13 000 kyat/person. When leaving Bagan, our hotel arranged free transportation to the bus terminal. This transportation was arranged free of charge, if you purchase your ticket at your accommodation. If you purchased it online, make arrangements with your accommodation, and it may be slightly extra.

Exit bus station immediately. Outside is a line of tuktuks. Taxi mafia in bus station are charging extortionate prices. 12k for a 10 minute drive down the road, and they refuse to do more than 1 stop even if it's only 30 seconds down the same road (to put it in perspective we paid 11k in Yangon for a 1hr taxi journey). Drivers are incredibly unfriendly and it's an unpleasant welcome into this city and county. They tell you they can't take more than 3 passengers so that tourists are forced to spend more (we had 4 in our taxi so that is a lie). A very negative experience, I hope something gets done about this.

Beware of the Taxi Mafia! These guys can be real aggressive and see you as a cash cow. They have even managed to convince the bus companies to no longer allow foreigners to be allowed to use the free shuttle buses to the city centers. Prices with start anywhere from 12,000 to 15,000 (sometimes per person). Official rate sign says 6,000 to 9,500 depending on where you go. When you point to this, they will make up some excuse how those were for the government taxis, which no longer exist and these guys are private taxis. Suggestion - start walking away, some of the driver won’t follow or will ‘get frustrated’ by you. Some of the nicer ones may follow and start discussing reasonable prices. Worst comes to worst, walk outside the station, there are Tuk-Tuks there. Chat with these drivers. Or walk to the road, that when prices really start to fall. In our experience, Taxi wanted 12,000 per person. Tuk-Tuk outside wanted 6,000 for two people. Tuk-Tuk on road was only 4,000. One woman from our bus managed to get the Taxi Driver down to 4,000. IMPORTANT : Always be polite and respectful when you are haggling, it goes along way. Remember 50 cents in your country doesn’t carry as far as it does here. However, if you turn to your friends / group and call the group of Taxi Drivers a “Taxi Mafia”, the more aggressive drivers may get frustrated and walk away. Leaving the more pleasant and reasonable ones behind. The app GetRide Myanmar estimates the Tuk-Tuk ride from here to Nyaung at 4,000-4,500.

Bagan Shwe Pyi Highway Bus Terminal is outside of Nyaung Oo Town.As soon as you reached to bus terminal there are a lot of taxi driver and motor bike drivers are impolitely called you offer to take their taxi with a unexpected amount of charges. Even bus terminal authorities announced the price rate from - to but they make tricky. Be careful when you take a taxi from terminal to your hotel. Taxi charge rate is as below: Nyaung U 6000MMK New Began 8500MMK Old Bagan 9000MMK per one taxi car If price is more higher than as announced make complaints to Bus authorities.

Taxi drivers work together to set high prices. A big sign quotes taxi price as 6000 for the taxi yet we were quoted double. Better walk 100m outside and catch a taxi or mototaxi on the main road. The terminal has many companies but perhaps better shop for a bus out as you arrive as they might get full. Bagan has a tourist trap uncomfortable vibe to it, unlike other places in Myanmar so see the temples and leave if you must

ATTENTION!!! Busstation with full of scammers. The Bagan Taxi Mafia has taken over this place. Don't pay any 15k to Bagan, that is too much. And don't listen to that "Morning Prices" that's also a trick! Just walk right up the street and take for example a TukTuk for only 3k! It's getting cheaper as you just near the big street!

Very basic bus terminal. We arrived from Inle Lake by mini van and asked the driver to drop us in Nyuang U - it was agreed when we bought the ticket. And when leaving to Bagan, the mini bus picked us at the hostel. Therefore we’re not aware of how much would be to go by taxi. Or even if there’s a cheaper option to leave the terminal. Anyway we arrived in the middle of the night 5am and there were a lot of taxis in the terminal ready for the ride and quite interested in getting it! To go to Bagan we used Moe Thauk Htun company at 2pm and it was a basic but comfortable mini bus with AC - 9000MKK.
