 In the pre-independence era of Burma, national leaders considered it important for the country to modernize agriculture, use domestic industries, and use ordinary resources for domestic industries. For such an economy to grow, electricity must be fully and sufficiently available throughout the country. Electric Power Corporation was incorporated under the Ministry of Industry No. 2. 1985 On 12 April, the Ministry of Industry No. 2 expanded the Ministry of Energy. The Electricity Corporation was incorporated under the Ministry of Energy. 1989 On April 1, the Electricity Corporation was reorganized as Myanma Electric Power Enterprise (MEPE). 1997 On 15 November, the Ministry of Energy expanded the Ministry of Electric Power. Department of Electric Power under the Ministry of Electric Power; Myanma Electric Power and Hydropower Department was formed with three departments. 2006 On 15 May, the Ministry of Electric Power was reorganized into two ministries, the Ministry of Electric Power No. 1 and the Ministry of Electric Power No. 2. On 5 September, the two ministries were merged to form the Ministry of Electric Power. It was reorganized into two businesses and two corporations.
