takes about 2-3 hours to get to the temple, on a very bumpy stretch of village road as you get closer. Once you reach the temples, there are two tall and beautiful Hindu temples built in South Indian style with large gopurams just like in India. It is believed to be very powerful temples, so go there, make a wish, eat at the nearby Tamil school where they serve lovely vegetarian food and make a donation according to your preference and you will enjoy the spiritual experience there.

Ulaganathan 64 years [President, of both Shri Ankaala Parameshwari (Durga) and Shri Muneeshwaran temple (Shiva)] told me-"Our village Peelikkad has 150 families and all of them are Hindus. All of us are farmers. I have been the president of both the temples for the past two years. I am myself here for the past four generations and this temple is in existence since 1861. I feel that Tamils in Myanmar are a very powerful community. We have the statue of the founder of the temple Sri Kuppuswami also placed in the premises of the temple. Sri Kuppuswami was the first trustee of this temple. In Tamilnadu the big Nandi is in Thanjavur but in Myanmar it is here in our temple. My ancestors belonged to Thanjavur district in the state of Tamilnadu. Its Kumbhabhishekam was done just four years back in 2011. 120 priests from India came and stayed here for 60 days for the Kumbhabhishekam. The performed havans related to the event. Now at present we have four priests or gurukkals here at this temple. Sam Veda tradition is being followed here at this Siva temple. Our priests are trained by the Indian priests who keep coming here. We travel to the outskirts of Yangon to visit two famous temples of the Tamil Hindu community in Myanmar one dedicated to Lord Siva, its name is Shri Muneeshwaran Temple and the other dedicated to Goddess Durga and its name is Shri Ankaala Parmeshwari Temple. On the first day we visited two temples which were located in the main downtown area and in the jungle of concrete but today these two temples were situated in a huge campus spread over several acres. This place was around thirty kilometres from the main city of Yangon. Unlike the temples in Yangon city, here we found both these temples were overflowing with devotees. Many of the devotees were coming from Yangon city and some other near by areas. Besides Tamils there were a large number of devotees who were of the Burmese and Chinese origins as well. Devotees were standing in long queues at both the temples with offering of fruits and some other traditional things which they wanted to offer to the presiding deities when they had their darshan. When the abhishekam of the deities was done hundred of devotees were standing in queues with their hands folded and eyes closed, delving into a deep meditative state. Both temples had huge covered area outside the main temples where the devotees were sitting on the floor and interacting with their family and friends. A large number of youth and children were accompanying their parents and relatives to these temples. Some of the devotees were sitting near the side walls of the temples and others were busy having pradikshana of the temple. What further charged the vibrations of the whole area was the traditional nadaswaram music being played by a group of musicians who also did the pradikshana of the temple while playing the music. Hundreds of devotees at both the temples followed the nadaswaram musicians in their pradikshana of the temple and a high level of energy emanated in the whole area due to the fervor and devotion of the devotees. It was a breathtaking scene seeing the colorfully attired devotees reverentially following the nadaswaram playing musicians. After the abhishekam and puja the priests would carry the aarti thali with a lighted lamp from which the devotees would seek blessings very reverentially and also offer some cash as offering. In fact there was a craving for seeking blessings from this divine lamp’s flame which is considered to be very auspicious and powerful. The majestic and royal gopurams of both the temples were so beautiful and well maintained that one was awestruck with their majesty and beauty. The whole floor at many places inside and outside the temple had rangoli markings. We were told that rangoli was made by the devotees every time there was an important Hindu festival. The temple was also gearing up for its annual firewalking festival which was a big attraction for the common masses besides the Tamil devotees and thousands attended it.
