The Old Moulmein Hostel

After traveling for the whole day with my heavy backpack, I wanted to spend the night in this apparently highly regarded hostel. However, the staff was very unsympathetic - I was running out of cash and the only viable way to pay for my stay was through online booking. Yet, the staff refused to give me access to the hostel’s WiFi despite me trying to explain that I am short of cash and I would like to pay via an online booking platform. The staff repeatedly refused to give me access on the grounds that I am not a guest. That’s fine because of this, I found Breeze Guesthouse who knows how to treat their guests better.

Our bus from Dawei forgot to let us out at Mawlamyine bus station on its way to Yangon, and Jessica went out of her way to help us in the middle of the night as the bus driver let us out further on the highway at 03 a.m. We had a short but very comfortable night in the 4-beds dorm. Everything was clean, the dorm beds are set up with a privacy curtain and individual power plug. Breakfast was included at the cafe next door. The hostel is located just next to the bus station, which is very convenient (if the bus driver does not forget to let you out). This hostel deserves it's good reviews and we can only highly recommend.

Booked only one night since my friend and I crossed the boarder from Mae Sot and just needed a place to stay. We wanted to add another night but it was already fully booked. Hostel: freshly renovated, very clean and cozy. We stayed in a double room with shared bathroom/toilet. A really nice shower and there was hot water. The room was small which was not an issue for us. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. A nice and simple breakfast with good coffee was included. Host: There are no words to describe how awesome Jessica is. Probably the friendliest host I‘ve ever met. She welcomed us when we arrived and also gave us tips to plan our trip to the south of Myanmar. It’s really easy to chat with her since her English is really good. She also helped us when we came back from Dawei and had an issue with our connecting bus to Hpa-an. I really recommend staying here if you come to Moulmein/Mawlamyine!

The place is very tidy and clean. The owners are very nice and are always willing to help you. The hostel is super well located right inside the bus station what is very useful. Despite the dorm is very small it is very comfortable. Everything in the bed was clean and with a fresh odor. The A/C works very good. Breakfast is very small. Dorm is very small and you can not bring your bag inside. However it's an invitation to be minimalist. I know that it has nothing to do with the hostel but I think it is necessary to write about it. We booked with the hostel a shared taxi to go Myawaddy because we needed to cross the border to Thailand. The driver of the taxi drove very bad all the time. He reached high speeds and overtook all cars even in curves and bridges. He also went off the road several times to overtake other vehicles. And he also chewed Betel nut and spit in a bottle while he had the steering wheel with just one hand. Several times we were about to crash with the cars that came in the other direction because this man was in the wrong way all the time. We felt that our lives were in danger all the time. Those were 4 long hours and we suffered a lot. I repeat. It has nothing to do with the hostel but I don't want other travelers have to deal with this situation again.

Me and my friend stayed here for only one night but it was absolutely worth it because we‘ve met Jessica who is the owner of the hostel! She is the nicest and most helpful person we‘ve met here in Myanmar and she even helped us one week later when we had to pass through Mawlamyine again and had problems with our connection bus to Hpa-an. It wasn‘t her concern but she still took care of the phone calls and organized a new bus for us. The hostel itself is really cute and we felt so welcomed. For breakfast there‘s good coffee and rice/toast with egg as usual. We would also recommend the restaurant next door which belongs to Jessica‘s aunt. It‘s cheap and the food is delicious:)

Enjoyed the hostel so much, I extended another 2 nights. The owners are incredibly friendly, helpful people who speak great English and I enjoyed talking with No No (Jessica) a lot! The beds are SO comfortable and they are right next to their own restaurant that serves a delicious chicken curry. They helped me arrange motorbikes for my stay and had information on places to visit on Bilu (Ogre) Island and how to get to them. They also helped me get an in-room Burmese massage! I felt bad because it seemed like a lot of trouble but the lady was excellent and I gave her a decent tip (tip is not usually expected). Also, the hostel location is walking distance to the bus station, very convenient! Overall, great stay :)

awesome hostel with a great and friendly host. he gave great recommendations and helped us book a bus ticket. we had the private room with our own bathroom. it was small but really clean and cozy with a great warm shower. we enjoyed our stay a lot and would come again.

I stayed here on Feb 13th 2020, as a single traveler. Extremely tiny rooms. The smallest rooms I've ever stayed in. It was suffocating at night because there wasn't enough oxygen to breathe in in the room (yes, it was that tiny). The entire 4-person bed room was so tiny I wouldn't stay there even if it was a 1-person bed room. Even keeping the door open wouldn't guarantee you a restful sleep since the tinyness is beyond description. The staff might be helpful, but as others have stated, as soon as they think what you ask for is not within their responsibility then they wouldn't rent the tiniest bit of help. As long as they deem you are a paying customer they are very nice to you, but once you are not a customer any longer then they wouldn't lend you the smallest bit of help.
