Thitaw Lay House

The owner Marc is very service oriented. A big wooden house with a veranda and chalet feel, it is nestled in a wooded hillside 15 minutes walk from the centre of Kalaw. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Marc is a wonderful host and we wishes we could have stayed longer.

We had a great trip at Thitawlay Guest house. The location is great because you can go on a beautiful half-day hike in the cool coniferous forests of northern Myanmar through friendly local village. We stayed in a bungalow and the room was super nice. Marc is a great host.

This place is fantastic. Rooms are great. Grounds are perfect. Host is exceptional. Breakfast is really cool: tiffin containers with bread, eggs fried rice, and excellent homemade banana bread. Only minor complaint is we followed their provided instructions for a hike and they seemed to be out of date or inaccurate. We got very lost.

I was recommended this hotel by a friend and it did not disappoint. We arrived by bus from Bagan and easily got a taxi to take us here. It's on the outskirts of town, so a little walk (15 mins) from the main "strip" if you can call it that, of food places, cafes, and markets. However we saw these four days as a hiking "vacation" so it was nice to be moving our legs and getting the steps up. The location is perfect for some local hiking. There are two recommended hikes in the welcome note they provide, both done without a guide and they start literally on the doorstep of the hotel. The breakfast every morning was incredible. Banana bread, local jams, eggs any style, great coffee, tea, juice, pancakes, homemade yoghurt, freshly baked bread, local honey, etc. The bungalow we had was perfect. No A/C as it's not needed (it gets quite cool in the evenings) the wooden bungalow was huge yet very cosy. Mosquito nets on the windows, two relaxing chairs on the decking out front and nestled in their beautiful green and quiet garden. At night you can hear crickets and nature sounds. It's really peaceful. The staff were very helpful, they offer laundry for a very reasonable price and were there if you had any questions or needed anything. They helped us to book our onwards travel to Inle Lake with ease. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again when visiting Kalaw. Loved every minute of my stay.

A wonderful place to stay! Best Western-style breakfast on my entire trip to Burma, with crepes and freshly baked bread. Rooms are large and clean. A tad far from town, but a pleasant walk or cheap scooter taxi ride.

Services mean for your comfort zone and quite mountain life to clear your mind.

Best place to stay in Kalaw! I really recommend to spend some night in this city. The house is near the forest, you have a lot of 1 day trekking easy to do around (we were invited in a monk house when we climbed the mountain!). It is a charming home, people are really nice. And the breakfast is perfect (pancakes and banana bread are just amazing). I strongly recommend this location! Peaceful, beautiful and resourcing.

My favorite place in Kalaw. Two bungalows in a beautiful garden and more rooms in a separate building. Delicious pancakes and bread with a choice of local jams for breakfast. From there it's a short walk to the bottom of a staircase with 589 steps which will take you to a pagoda at the top of a hill from where you can enjoy a great view on Kalaw.
